Military watchdog claims US military no longer targets Afghanistan drug labs

The US Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction, John Sopko, has suggested that a US bombing campaign targeting drug labs in Afghanistan has ended, although no official announcement has been made. The operation began in 2017 following the US president’s national address in August of that year. The bombing campaign was part of attempts to restrict funding raised by the Taliban through heroin production. However, with opium production remaining high it has been suggested that targeting production labs has been ineffective and therefore discontinued.
