FDA announces new guidelines for opioid medications

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has withdrawn its previous guidance on opioid medication and replaced it with a new regulatory framework intended to reduce the harms of prescription opioid medications. The new regulations will be used to assess applications for new drugs coming on to the US market and will require producers to demonstrate that new products are less addictive than existing medications. Medication producers will also be required to list medication features that reduce the potential for harms, overdose and addiction.
