Ecuador sends army to prisons to quell fights over drug trafficking territory

The Vice President of Ecuador, Otto Sonnenholzner, has announced that army forces have been sent to several prisons to increase security. Violence and gang warfare have erupted in several regional prisons in Ecuador with rival gangs apparently fighting for control of drug trafficking both on the streets and within those prisons. Ecuador’s prisons are reportedly understaffed and have ongoing issues with corruption with 21 prison guards found smuggling drugs or alcohol for prisoners in the first half of 2019.
