79% of cannabis sales in Canada still take place on the illicit market

Data from Statistics Canada show that most of the cannabis trade in Canada remains on the illicit market. In the last quarter of 2018, 79% of transactions were not conducted through official sources. The data show that illicit sales are declining and comprised 90% of cannabis sales in the previous quarter. Many cite the price of cannabis as the reason for a persisting illicit market in cannabis, with legal cannabis estimated to be around 40% more expensive than cannabis bought on the illicit market.
